Dean Lewins has been a photojournalist for the past 37 years. Dean is currently the Chief Photographer at Australia’s National Newswire service, the Australian Associated Press (AAP), where he has worked for more than 25 years, as a senior photographer and photographic editor. Dean has covered six summer Olympic Games, one winter Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games, Football World Cups, Rugby World Cups and the Ashes series, along with numerous Rugby League grand finals, A-League grand finals and a variety of international sport. His passion for sport is only equalled by his passion for news. Dean covered the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, the 2014 Brisbane floods, 2017-20 NSW drought, the 2006 unrest in East Timor, the 2006 intervention in the Solomon Islands, the 2002 Bali Bombings and Australian troop efforts in Iraq. An assignment to Antarctica for the 100th anniversary of Mawson’s Landing is a career highlight. Dean won the 2018 Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year award with a broad portfolio showcasing his sport, climate disaster and feature photography from hat year, he has been a finalist in the Head On Portrait Prize and received a special merit award in the 2023 World Sports Photography Awards. Dean was also a member of the Walkley Judging Board from 2021-23.
